The truth about dental chews and clean teeth

Happy dog — DashBoo natural chew treats

The dental chew market is enormous — and largely unregulated. Walk down the pet aisle and you'll find dozens of products claiming to clean teeth, freshen breath, and prevent tartar. Most of them don't work. Here's what the science actually says, and what to look for instead.

How chewing cleans teeth

The mechanical action of chewing is the primary driver of dental cleaning in dogs. As a dog gnaws on a hard surface, the abrasive contact removes plaque from tooth surfaces — particularly the back molars, where most tartar accumulates. Soft chews, despite their marketing, provide almost no mechanical benefit: they compress rather than abrade.

Why hardness matters

Hard cheese chews like DashBoo work because they require sustained, effortful chewing. The density of the bar means your dog has to work at it — and that sustained gnawing action is what actually shifts plaque. A chew your dog finishes in two minutes isn't doing much for their teeth. A chew that lasts an hour is.

The problem with most dental chews

Most commercial dental chews are made from starch, glycerin, and artificial flavourings pressed into a toothbrush shape. They're soft enough to eat quickly, which means minimal mechanical action. Some contain chlorophyll for 'fresh breath' — which masks odour rather than addressing its cause. And many contain sugars that actively feed the bacteria responsible for plaque.

What vets actually recommend

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) recommends products that have been clinically tested for plaque and tartar reduction. Beyond certified products, most vets agree that hard, natural chews — raw bones (with caveats), antlers, and hard cheese chews — provide genuine mechanical cleaning benefit. The key is hardness, duration, and the absence of added sugars.

DashBoo chews are hard, long-lasting, and contain no added sugars or artificial ingredients. They're not a replacement for brushing — but as part of a dental care routine, they're one of the most effective natural options available.
